COLOMBIA. 8 Escudos, 1754-S. NGC EF-45.
Ferdinand VI (1746-60). Fr-11S; KM-26; SF-C8-FVI-54; Cal-type-17#59; Calico-629. While the production of gold in Columbia began in 1622, for more than a century production was limited mainly to the 2 Escudos denomination. In fact, it is not until 1743 that the first 8 Escudos is documented. The production of Cob 8 Escudos spans a short period, just over a decade from 1743 to 1756 with only a small number of examples that can be attributed to any one given date. Hence all "Cob" 8 Escudos of Columbia should be considered RARE. The specimen offered here exhibits a full four digit date of 1754, a date with only 6 examples known. The surfaces are highlighted with attractive and rich old orange gold tone and exhibit excellent central details. Only minor peripheral striking weakness is noted at edges, as to be expected on cob coinage. Full date, clear mintmark and most of kings name are visible. EXTREMELY RARE. NGC EF-45.
