GERMANY. Black Shame on the Rhine Medal, 1920.
58.6 mm Kienast-262. Bronze cast. By Karl Goetz. Plain edge. Bestial caricature of helmeted French African soldier l., "DIE WACHT AM RHEIN, LIBERTE / EGALITE / FRATERNI / TE below."; Reverse: Nude Lorelei bound to the phallic post crowned by French helmet, "DIE SCWARZE SCHANDE", the Black Shame. Deep brown patina, minor spot on phallus. Here is a very sharp example of one of Goetz' most famous and controversial medals, attacking France and the reported atrocities against German women committed by her Colonial troops. A specimen of this medal in our August 2009 Coin Galleries auction brought $2,875. ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.
