Anglo-Gallic, Edward the Black Prince, as prince of Aquitaine (1362-1372), gold hardi, Bordeaux, half length figure facing, wearing rose diadem, holding sword, within tressure of arches, rev. cross quernée with quartrefoil at centre, alternating leopards and lis in angles, all within tressure of arches, wt. 3.90gms. A popular historical piece struck on French soil in the name of an English prince (son of Edward III and father of Richard II) after his acquisition of Aquitaine in the Battle of Poitiers. One of the original Knights of the Garter, he went to France and won his most famous victory over the French on 19 September 1355, following the defeat of the French, King John II was brought to England and made to pay a 3,000,000 gold crown ransom and Aquitaine was given to England. Edward became Prince of Aquitaine in 1362 and moved there in 1363. It was not a successful venture and he was to return to England in 1371.
