FRANCE. Juno and Psyche, ND (1900).
47mm silver, by Levillain. 2nd SAMF issue. Maier 2. Obverse: Juno holds the severed head of Argus, whose innumerable eyes then fall into the tail-feathers of the peacock. Reverse: Psyche sits mournfully before the entrance to the underworld. The main figures are in normal relief, the secondary details are modeled very softly. The delicacy of the effect only heightens the power of Levillain's compositions. The artist has no problem capturing his mythological subjects through the use of the most modern stylistic treatment. One of 105 issued in silver (numbered 18 on edge), of a total mintage of 291. NEARLY MINT STATE.
