FRANCE. Daniel-Dupuis, Medalist. On His Untimely Death, Issued 1901 as the 7th Issue of the SAMF.
50mm silver, by Daniel-Dupuis; the reverse completed posthumously by his friend Lechevrel. Obverse: Self-Portrait. Reverse: A little angel with torch --the New Century-- seated on a cloud-like mound; all on a half-globe inscribed with his birth & death dates (1849 & 1899). The SAMF had commissioned Dupuis to make a medal for the turn of the century, but his work was interrupted, along with his life, when his deranged wife murdered him. Only 50, he might have succeeded Chaplain and Roty as the foremost master of the form. 110 of the 274 pieces struck were in silver (edge numbered "42"). ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.
