FRANCE. Protection of Infants, (1885).
67mm silver, by Chaplain. Maier 68. Obverse: Mother with nursing baby; she has soup while her toddler begs for some; in distance, faintly engraved, farmers plow fields. Award reverse. Refers to a law, 1874, intended to reduce infant mortality. The mother's breast is noticeably large, the suckling infant not hiding much of it from view, and the small boy is nude with genitals displayed. This is another stunningly beautiful Art-Nouveau tableau, but one wonders where but in France its earthiness would have met with approval. Seven years later, in the USA, St. Gaudens' reverse for the Colombian Expo award medal, with a full-frontal nude male lad, was rejected. In original case. SUPERB MINT STATE.
