FRANCE. Jean-Leon Girome (1824-1904), Genre Painter, 1885.
102mm cast bronze, as issued, by Chaplain. Obverse: Shoulder-length bust right, hair tousled. Reverse: Seated nude female, "Pittura;" mosque behind her; sphinx; gladiator helmet. These refer to Gerome's orientalist paintings, and those of classical Rome. This is a rare medal, always cast --not always as nice as this example-- and often uniface. Examples feature in the online catalogs of both the Met and Dahesh museums, NYC. An example, probably not as nice, is noted on an art dealer's website, priced $2000. EXTREMELY FINE.
