FRANCE. Algeria. Algiers-Constantine Railway, 1886.
68mm silver, by Roty. Maier 94, Baxter 31. Obverse: The two civic goddesses, kissing passionately; hiding behind them are features of the two cities. Reverse: Nude female, twisting between inscriptions.
The proposed link between the two principal Algerian cities is allegorically presented by Roty with what may have been unselfconscious eroticism. The names on the reverse are rolled out like the credits at the end of a movie. These observations may sound slightly critical, but they mean little to today's collectors: the medal is exceptionally beautiful, and one of the most popular among Roty's oeuvre. A cast bronze example in our November 2012 auction realized $1645. Very scarce in (struck) bronze, but rare in silver. Whispy traces of cabinet friction and with a superb patina.
NEARLY SUPERB MINT STATE.
