FRANCE. Christophle, Anniverary, 1842-1892.
59x95mm silver. Maier 97, Baxter 33. Obverse: Triptych form, with side panels showing very young nude girls, one an artisan, one relaxing in Nature; in center, a mature, draped female shows a vase to the company founder, with legend translating "Science applied and made commonplace." Reverse: Also in triptych, scenes of a technician silver-plating a pot and a worker making a vase(?); commemorative inscription in center panel. The standing men are in fact the important medalist Paulin Tasset and (on right) Roty himself. Roty designed some cutlery for Christople, which remains a leading firm producing decorative housewares in superb silver-plate. This is an early and important example of an industrial medal. It is lovely, which helps convey its message, that Science is both useful to society in everyday life and a source of sheer beauty. CHOICE ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.
