FRANCE. Helmeted Head of the French Republic.
68mm bronze, by Bottee. An inventive and rather busy image of Madame la Republique, incorporating a tiny angel as a neck-clasp and the Gallic Cock as an answer to the German Pickelhaube. A medal such as this was intended to be used as an award, with the giver engraving the relevant information. However, many award medals were collected for their art. This piece, while perhaps over-the-top, is a collector favorite. Faint spotting but very attractive. NEARLY MINT STATE.
