FRANCE. Alexander III Bridge in Paris, First Stone Laid, 1896.
68mm silver, by Daniel-Dupuis. Maier 92. Quite rare in silver, although often seen in silvered bronze. Obverse: French and Russian goddesses, greeted by a third goddess, who points to the late Czar in the heavens. In the exergue, an excerpt from a poem written for the ceremony. Reverse: Reclining goddess of The Seine, with a cherub, holding a banner with date MDCCCXCVI.; below, a list of the attending dignitaries, including Nicholas and Alexandra.
The year 1896 was an auspicious one in Franco-Russian relations, as the two nations formed an alliance. It is commemorated by numerous French medals, some quite fine and some in the souvenir class. From Germany, there are a few satirical medals in response. Lovely purple-grey toning.
AS MADE.
