FRANCE. Day of the Soldier, May 25, 1915.
55mm vermeil (gilt silver), by Lalique. Rare. Obverse: Nude French soldier grabs huge eagle (German) by the throat. Reverse: Date amidst laurel sprig. The soldier is in relief, but the nearly-vanquished eagle is incused, like on a $5 Indian Gold coin. The effect is visually striking but also narrative, telling of a triumph over a powerful but inhuman enemy. CHOICE ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.
