FRANCE. USA. American Entry into WW1, 1917.
68mm silver, by Rene Gregoire. Maier 248. Obverse: Woodrow Wilson three-quarters facing left; American eagle at bottom. Reverse: French and British goddesses welcome a female personification of the USA, artillery to the left, the burning Cathedral of Reims in the distance; Wilson quote in exergue. The woman looks nothing like any American female archetype, toting a rifle. Three years into the war, Art-Nouveau was looking very out-of-touch with a harsh and changing reality. A trivial spot near Wilson's right shoulder, but CHOICE ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.
