FRANCE. Homage to Medalists, (1891).
48x66mm silver, by Alphonse Lechevrel. Not common in bronze, but rare in silver. Obverse: Nude female, seen from behind, writes the names of important medalists on a scroll; to left, medals-making equipment. Reverse: Laurel branch. An important numismatic medal. In our September 2009 Philadelphia auction, an example brought $862.50 (in bronze). The named medalists are Oudine, J-C Chaplain, Roty, Chapu, DeGeoerge, Dupuis, Bottee, LaGrange, Patey, Tasset, Vernon, A. Dubois and HFrancois. A contemporary study of the art medal by Roger Marx, the single most important scholar of the field, used this plaquette as a cover illustration. EXTREMELY FINE.
