ITALY. Papal States. Restoration of St. Paul's Basilica.
82mm bronzed copper, by Bianchi. Pius IX bust left. Reverse. Interior view of the basilica, engraved with great depth. In the manner of the Belgian Jacques Wiener. His series of cathedral medals, with their remarkable interiors you could "walk right into," were a great commercial success. Bianchi's effort is as good or better, and the 82mm diameter makes this a spectacular example of a 19th Century medal. NEARLY SUPERB MINT STATE.
