GREAT BRITAIN. Silver "Free Grammar School of Wimborne Minster (Dorset)" Medal, Founded 1563, Issued 1811.
40.33 mm; 43.2 gms. Eimer-unlisted; BHM-unlisted. This school was originated in 1497, and became known as the Wimborne Minster Grammar School when it received its Royal Charter in 1563. Currently a secondary school and known as Queen Elizabeth's School. A handsome award medal featuring a crowned bust of Queen Elizabeth I in Royal dress, holding a scepter. The motto "SUME SUPERBIAM QUAESITAM MERITIS. HOR.", bust signed TW; Reverse: Seven line inscription, "THE FREE/ GRAMMAR SCHOOL/ WIMBORNE MINSTER/ DORSET./ FOUNDED BY/ ROYAL CHARTER/ MDLXIII", edge: "2nd CLASS 1811". Looped. BOLD VERY FINE.
