ITALY. Trio of Large Bronze Art Medals By Giampaoli & Giannone.
3 pieces in lot. The first medal (102.6 mm) by Pietro Giampaoli features a bust of the sculptor's wife, Letitia, and was issued as an homage to her on their tenth wedding anniversary in 1951; Reverse: Cartouche featuring their four children. The portrait was used from 1958 to 2001 as the reverse of Italy's circulating 500 Lire coin. Giampaoli was also responsible for designing most Italian and Vatican City coinage in the two decades following WWII. The second medal (100.7 mm) is also by Giampaoli and is a portrait medal of Benvenuto Cellini, sculptor and writer from Florence, done in a Renaissance style. The enigmatic reverse bears a partial image of undetermined design. The final medal (111.1 mm) is by Giannone and was produced for the 1968 Woman in Medals Exposition. The reverse features an explicit homoerotic image. SOLD AS IS/NO RETURNS. MINT STATE.

From the Demarete Collection.
