NETHERLANDS. Faith, Hope and Love Bronze Medal, ca. 1853. NGC MS-64 BN.
54 mm. By Hart. Standing draped female figure holding pole with Liberty cap, leaning on column, legend "HANG TVEMVR HAG NITIMVR" around; Reverse: "GELOOF HOOP LIEFDE/ 1517/1648/EN/1853", within oak wreath. 1517 and 1648 are the traditionally accepted dates of the Protestant Reformation, and in 1853 Pope Pius IX restored their episcopal hierarchy in the Netherlands, causing a wave of anti-Catholicism to spread throughout the mainly Protestant populace of the Netherlands. NGC erroneously identifies this as a commemorative medal for the Treaty of Utrecht. NGC MS-64 BN.
