Republic silver "Banque de France" Octagonal Jeton L'An 8 (1800) MS61 NGC, Feuardent-4951, Bramsen-29. 35mm. By Dumarest. Edge: Bee. LA SAGESSE FIXE LA FORTUNE ("Wisdom secures fortune"). Allegorical standing figures of Wisdom, left, turned to the right, holding a shield with the head of Medusa, and stretching out his arm toward Fortune, right, turned towards Wisdom, pouring coins from his horn of plenty into a treasury box. Behind Fortune, a sword and a shield.
The Banque de France was created on January 18, 1800 as a partnership limited by shares, with merchants and bankers, and with the support of Napoleon Bonaparte. Its purpose was to restore confidence in the currency to promote economic recovery.
