Kingdom of Macedon, Alexander III 'the Great' AR Obol. Uncertain mint, circa 324/3 BC. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress / Zeus Aëtophoros seated to left, holding sceptre; AΛEΞANΔ[POY] to right, no visible controls. CNG E-522, lot 35 (same dies); otherwise unpublished. 0.60g, 10mm, 3h.
Very Fine. Very Rare.
From the inventory of a German dealer.
As noted by the CNG cataloguer, obols of Alexander III with no control marks are unknown, though the obverse style seen here is similar to coins Price attributed to Berytos mint (that are in fact probably issues from Byblos). The present coin makes clear that this type does indeed lack markings (rather than them being obscured by the patina, as was suggested for the CNG piece).
