18th Century Copy: Sicily, Syracuse AR Tetradrachm. Unknown maker. Circa 405-400 BC. Signed by Eukleidas. Charioteer driving galloping quadriga to left, holding reins and flaming torch; Nike flying to right above to crown the charioteer, [ear of barley] in exergue / Head of the nymph Arethusa to left, wearing triple pendant earring and necklace, and with hair enclosed in sphendone ornamented with stars and knotted over the ampyx; four dolphins and ΣYRAKOΣIO[N] around. Though not a maker's mark that this cataloguer has come across before, we must assume that the lettering SCES in the obverse exergue is an abbreviated company name or suchlike.
