TURKEY: AE medal, AH1338 (1922), Medal of Independence (Istiklal Madalyasi), dated 1 Teshrin-i sani AH1338 in the Rumi calendar in the new Latin alphabet (November 1, 1922) below map of Anotolia with new capital of Ankara shown as a radiant star, all within elongated star and crescent / dated 28 Nisan AH1336 in the Rumi calendar in the new Latin alphabet (April 28, 1920), with the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (today the Museum of the Republic) below radiant sun, buildings either side including a mosque, symbols in industry and agriculture below with original ribbon and 'pin', a very rare medal, About Unc, RRR.

On November 1, 1922, the Ottoman Sultanate was abolished by the Turkish Grand National Assembly and Sultan Mehmed VI departed the country. This allowed the Turkish nationalist government in Ankara to become the sole governing entity in the nation. The Medal of Independence was a special military decoration issued in limited number by Grand National Assembly of Turkey in accordance with the Act 66 of November 29, 1920. It was awarded to military personnel and civilians, who had made important contributions to the country during the Turkish War of Independence. Also upon the flags of all the regiments of the Turkish National Forces, which took part in the campaigns during the occupation of Izmir between May 15, 1919 and September 9, 1922, were bestowed a medal.
