This medal proclaims the support of the statesman and historian Carlos Maria de Bustamante (1774-1848) for the newly crowned Ferdinand VII. Bustamante was a leader in the cause for Mexican independence, a newspaper publisher, editor, historian, and statesman. The obverse inscription indicates Bustamante's complex relationship to the monarchy, casting Ferdinand as the leader of a "free people," a sentiment that would have been seditious only 20 years prior. Photo size reduced.
