William III (1694-1702), Pattern Farthing, 1698, struck in silver, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right, legend surrounds GVLIELMVS TERTIVS. Rev, Britannia seated left, date following legend as BRITANNIA1698, stop after date, edge plain, 5.06g, (BMC [Peck] 680). Struck from specially prepared highly polished dies in silver rather than copper to create this presentation piece known as a 'proof'. Only a very small number would have been issued, as well as being superior to the regular issue of this year it is also rare. A magnificent and a desirable piece. Extremely fine.
