James III (1460-88), Groat, Edinburgh mint, main issue 1484-88, type VI, mintmark cross fleury on the reverse only, crowned bust facing three-quarters left, annulet on inner circle before face, double arched crown, +IΛCOBVS DEI GRΛCIΛ REX ΛOTRV surrounds. Rev, long cross, pellets with annulet and crowns in alternate angles, outer legend reads +DINS PROTΛ ORMET ERATO, inner script VILLΛ EDIHBVRG, single and double annulet stops both sides, 2.66g (S.5287; SCBI 35 [Scottish], 778). A desirable and distinct renaissance piece with much of its original mint bloom permeating the surfaces. Edge serrations in the lower south west region although no signs of clipping, portrait clear with all the main details in place, few areas of weakness, legends legible. About very fine for issue, very rare. A sought after if not key type within the series. Much eye appeal.
