James V (1513-42), Groat of one shilling and six pence, Edinburgh mint, second coinage [1526-39], type I, mantled bust right with double-arched crown within beaded inner linear circle, legend surrounds +IΛCOBVS 5 DEI GRΛ REX SCOTOR, double annulet stops. Rev, pointed shield with lion rampant at centre, over long cross fourchée within linear circle, reads VILLΛ:EDINBRVGHX, 2.57g (S.5376; SCBI 35 [Scottish], 910-12; B. 23, fig. 724; SCBI 58 [Edinburgh Museum], 43-50). A pleasing example of Renaissance portraiture, simplistic yet imposing in its style and overall aesthetic. Fully centred in strike with a light grey cabinet tone, darker in the recesses, legends legible with few soft spots. The portrait consistently well detailed, perhaps a little softness in the initial strike. Rev, lion rampant much as struck. Very fine, very rare.

Ex. Mark Senior, bt April 2000.
