Mary (1542-67), Fourth period [1565-67], with Henry Darnley, One-Third Ryal of Ten shillings, 1565, mintmark thistle on reverse only, crowned Scottish shield, thistles flanking, inner beaded border, legend surrounds MARIA ET HENRIC 9 DEI GRA ET R SCOTORVM. Rev, tortoise climbing up crowned palm tree, date either side of trunk, reads DAT GLORIA VIRES, outer legend EXURGAT DEVS ET DISSIPENTR INIMICI EIVS, 9.72g (S.5427; SCBI 35 [Scottish], 1129-30; SCBI 58, 1208-16). Unevenly toned, some porosity concentrated in the obverse high points, shield and legends showing some pleasing detail. Rev, bold palm tree with a clear division in the graduating leaves, the climbing tortoise uncharacteristically struck up, normally a contorted blur whether it be on a Ryal, its half or on the rarer third of a ryal. Good very fine, a fetching example, rare.

Ex. Nigel Mills, bt October 2005.
