James VI (1567-1625), One-Third Ryal, first coinage, 1570, inner beaded circles both sides, crowned coat of arms embellished with fleur de lis around rampant lion, crowned I and R either side, legend surrounds IACOBVS 6 DEI GRATIA REX SCOTORVM. Rev, date divided by crowned sword, hand to left pointing to value 'X' for ten shillings, legend reads PRO ME SI MEREOR IN ME, which translates to For me but against me if I deserve, 9.90g (S.5476; B. 4, fig. 923 var; SCBI 58 [Edinburgh], 1376). Rich grey cabinet tone with underlying mint brilliance around the periphery, residual traces of lustre. Legends both sides legible with few areas of softness, shield and the sword motif well struck. A scarce example of this fractional denomination, the vast majority that arise appear to be the 1578 re-evaluation countermarked types, this being an original unblemished example. Good very fine, rare, fastened to an excellent pedigree.
