James VI (1567-1625), Balance half merk, Sixth Coinage, 1591, initial mark heraldic cinquefoil both sides, crowned shield, between two thistles, inner and outer beaded borders, legend surrounds IACOBUS 6D GR SCOTORVM 1591. Rev, balance with a sword behind, reads HIS DIFFERT REGE TYRANNVS, which translates to In these, a tyrant differs from a king, 4.62g (S.5491; SCBI 35 [Edinburgh], 1247ff). Mottled uneven tone in a variegated ash and light grey, omitting the usual pronounced weakness in the shield, complimented by clear legends and emblems. Rev, well detailed and sharp in the balance and the sword, lustrous in the fields. Good very fine, an iconic type.
