USA, Benjamin Franklin Birth Bicentennial Medal 1906. Bronze medal (101mm., 396.14gm) by Augustus and Louis Saint-Gaudens. His bust l. in a palm wreath, rev. History sitting upon a throne holding a shield with a Latin inscription that translates as: "He snatched from the heavens the bolt and from the tyrant the sceptre" and in front standing three allegorical figures (from left to right), Franklin's varied contributions to Literature, Science, and Philosophy. Edge - TIFFANY & CO. (Greenslet GM-118). Extremely Fine, nicely patinated, enhanced (?) by contrasting verdigris in recesses, very rare.

These medals were struck by Tiffany & Co. in early 1906 in an edition of 151: 1 gold, which was presented to the Republic of France, and 150 bronzes, 100 of which went to the U.S. government for distribution and were presented by President Theodore Roosevelt. The other 50 going to the American Philosophical Society for its purposes. These presumably have the TIFFANY & CO edge mark, as here.
