Henry VIII (1509-47), Groat, second coinage (1526-44), Tower mint, mintmark rose both sides, crowned bust in profile right, Laker bust D, legend surrounds HENRIC VIII D G R ΛGL Z FRΛNC. Rev, long cross fourchée over quartered shield of arms, saltires in fork ends, reads POSVI DEV Λ DIVTOR E MEV, 2.80g (S.2337E; N.1797; Whitton [i] ). Struck on good metal on a marginally irregular flan, some raised die flaws and breaks, light golden toning with hues of mint red around the periphery. The portrait showing all the lines and striations in the hair, the reverse shields equally definitive. Much as struck. Superb.
