Edward VI (1547-53), Sovereign, struck in crown gold of 22ct, third period, 1550-1553, mintmark Y both sides, armoured half-length figure of the king right, wearing double arched crown, outer arch jewelled, holding upright sword in right hand and cupping orb in left, inner linear circle within beaded
circle, legend reads EDWΛRD VI DG ΛGL FRΛN Z HIB REX. Rev, crowned quartered shield of arms with lion and dragon supporters flanking, ER set in cartouche below with scrolls surrounding within beaded inner circle, legend reads HIS ΛVTEM TRΛNCI PER MEDI ILLOR IBΛT, 11.19g (S.2450; N.1927; Schneider 690 same dies). Struck on a symmetrical flan with much of the original mint lustre apparent especially in the periphery, legends definitive and concise, some metal annealing fissures in the fields from the initial heating and cooling of the metal during the minting process. A well-proportioned and pleasing portrait and figure. Rev, toned with consistent detail in both the supporters and quartered coat of arms. Bold good very fine, a scarcer mintmark, often mintmark Tun encountered on these types.
