French Somaliland Banque de l'Indochine, Djibouti 5 Francs ND (ca. 1945) Pick Unlisted. Hand Drawn Essay From Pikovsky Printing Works. A stunning work of colored pencil on cardstock. The design is drawn primarily in blue with distinct, African styled borders. At left is a shield with three spears and two machetes. This is similar to the adopted design used by Pikovsky Printing Works for the reverse of the issued 500 Francs (Pick 19). This coat of arms saw a number of changes over the years, with a similar design still used by Djibouti today. On back is a harbor scene with docked fishing vessels. Printer's annotations are noted in the margins at top and bottom on both sides. Face and back measure 235mm x 210mm and 235mm x 206 mm respectively. These Hand Drawn Essays are plate photos on pages 175 and 177 in Raphael Dabbah's Printed in Palestine reference book.
