French Somaliland Banque de l'Indochine, Djibouti 1000 Francs ND (ca. 1945) Pick Unlisted. Hand Drawn Essay From Pikovsky Printing Works. The 1000 hand drawn essay here is the final and highest denomination featured in this set. French Somaliland issued the 5, 20, 100, 500, and 1000 Franc notes. We presume this was the proposed redesign, as the artwork is much more detailed, and would require far more production time than the series in circulation. The 1000 here features a blue and yellow pencilled face design with a man at left and woman at right. The portraiture proposed by Pikovsky on this design might have been the inspiration for the Bank of France redesigns later. The portraits used on notes form this country are iconic, heralded the world over for capturing minute facial expressions. On back is a market scene in red and blue pencil. Face and back 360mm x 260mm and 345mm x 230mm respectively. These Hand Drawn Essays are plate photos on pages 191 and 193 in Raphael Dabbah's Printed in Palestine reference book.
