Zanzibar Zanzibar Government 10 Rupees 1.2.1928 Pick 3 PMG Very Fine 25 Net. If one was to consider a top ten list of iconic African banknotes, it is impossible to imagine a list devoid of at least one representation of a famed Zanzibar example. In recent times, this coveted series has propelled itself into a class of its own, and is continually increasing in its popularity. Colonial influence on the small island started in the 15th century. Portuguese explorers were the first to arrive, followed by the Omani's, and then the British in 1890. As a semi-autonomous protectorate, a need for a local currency arose. At the time, Zanzibar was the largest exporter of clove. The Zanzibar Rupee replaced the Zanzibar Ryal, and was first issued in 1908. Interestingly, the Zanzibar Rupee was 1:1 to the Indian Rupee, and was circulated until 1936. It was also this time that the East African Shilling became legal tender. All denominations are uniface, an Arab dhow is noticed to the left, and a clove harvesting scene to right. Each scene is beautifully highlighted by Arabic arches that effortlessly adds to the broader tang of the design. Rust, small holes.
