PHOKIS, Federal Coinage. Circa 510-500 BC. Triobol (Silver, 11 mm, 3.09 g, 12 h). ΦΟΚΙ Head and neck of bull to right, with a beaded truncation. Rev. Φ-Ο-Κ-Ι (retrograde from the bottom left) Head of Artemis to right wearing a necklace of pearls and with her hair tied with a tainia over her head and her ponytail tied below her ear and at the end; all within a shallow incuse square. BCD Phokis 170 (this coin) and 179 (same reverse die). Williams - (these dies: O1/R4, but this combination is unpublished and probably should be placed prior to Williams 4). Very rare. The earliest appearance of Artemis in the coinage of the Phokian League. A remarkable coin of late Archaic style. Some deposits, otherwise, good very fine.
