IONIA. Uncertain mint. Circa 600-550 BC. 1/24 Stater (Electrum, 6.5 mm, 0.70 g), Phokaic Standard. Goose standing left. Rev. Incuse square. HPM pl. IX, 2-3 and SNG Berry 1026 (same dies). Extremely rare and interesting. Good very fine.

Some commentators have suggested that the bird on the reverse of this coin is a duck; Thompson, in the Berry Sylloge, termed it a swan, and Svoronos, who attributed this coin to an uncertain mint in Macedonia, called it a goose. In the end, while this coin is surely not from northern Greece - two examples were apparently found on Samos - it is certainly a goose!
