LUCANIA. Metapontum. Circa 340-330 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 21.5 mm, 7.54 g, 7 h). Head of Demeter to right, weaing pendant earring and pearl necklace, wreathed with grain ears and with veil hanging over the back of her head; below chin, [AΠ]. Rev. META Grain ear with leaf to left; above leaf, mouse to left; below leaf, [Φ]. HN III 1570. Johnston Class A, 8.9 (same dies). SNG ANS 419 (same dies). Struck from an obverse die of exceptionally fine style; nicely toned. Scattered porosity, otherwise, about extremely fine.

The head of Demeter on the obverse is clearly based on Euainetos's head of Arethusa, produced in Sicily some sixty years earlier.
