PERSIA, Alexandrine Empire. Mazaios, satrap of Babylon, circa 331-328 BC. Double Daric (Gold, 20 mm, 17.11 g, 9 h). Baaltars seated half-left on a backless stool, his head and torso facing, holding a long scepter set on ground with his left hand, and, in his right, holding a grain ear and a grape bunch on a vine, upon which an eagle right with folded wings stands to right. Rev. Lion attacking bull to left; all within a linear square. F. Holt & O. Bopearachchi, The Alexander Medallion, 2011, note 106 and figs. 51-2 var. = Miho Museum, Treasures of Ancient Bactria, 2002, 44 a-b var. Triton X, 2007, 412 (same dies). Very rare. Clear but with some wear. Good very fine.

It should be noted that while a small number of these coins are known (there are a few varieties), they have elicited some disbelief on the part of a number of commentators. The fact is, however, that careful examination proves beyond a doubt that the coins are fully genuine: their striking technique, their dies, and their "feel" is absolutely right; and their relation to the "running Persian King" double darics is quite clear as well.
