PHOENICIA. Tyre. Circa 425-394 BC. Shekel (Silver, 25 mm, 12.99 g, 1 h). Melqarth, riding on a hippocamp to right, holding bow and arrows with his left hand and the reins with his right; below, dolphin swimming to right under waves; around, guilloche border. Rev. Owl standing to right, before crook and flail; around, guilloche border. BMC 20 (same dies). E&E-T Group II.1.1.1.a, 276 (O16/R13). Rouvier 1788. A handsome, nicely toned example. A few light scratches and porosity, otherwise, good very fine.
From a European collection and that of a Nobleman who died in 1940 (with the original green collector's ticket).
