Pertinax, 193. Sestertius (Orichalcum, 35 mm, 22.90 g, 5 h), Rome, 1 January -28 March 193. IMP CAES P HELV PERTINAX AVG Laureate head of Pertinax to right. Rev. PROVIDENTIAE DEORVM COS II / S C Providentia standing left, extending her right hand towards a large star in the upper left field, and radiate globe to upper left, and resting her left hand on her breast. Banti 20. BMC 28. Cohen 52. Lempereur 780 (D281/R405). RIC 22. Woodward, NC 1957, pl. 12, 1 (same dies). With an excellent portrait of Pertinax and an attractive green-black patina. Some overall roughness and the reverse both lightly and double-struck, otherwise, about extremely fine.

This coin, with its sober and powerful portrait of the stern emperor Pertinax was struck from the same dies as the lovely example that appeared as lot 1209 of Numismatica Ars Classica 64 in 2012: That coin, estimated at CHF 30,000 went for a magnificent 60,000! Of course, they are not quite the same...though the portrait certainly is.
