Theodosius II, 402-450. Solidus (Gold, 21 mm, 4.36 g, 6 h), 444. D N THEODO - SIVS P F AVG Diademed and bearded bust of Theodosius II to left, wearing consular robes and holding a mappa in his right hand and a cruciform sceptre in his left. Rev. IMP XXXXIIII COS XVIII / COMOB Theodosius II, nimbate and wearing consular robes, seated facing on low throne, holding a mappa in his raised right hand and a long cruciform sceptre, with two pellets on the shaft, in his left. Depeyrot 69/1. LRC 428. RIC 330. Extremely rare. Very well-struck and most attractive, with exceptional types. Extremely fine.
From an American collection, acquired prior to 2005.

Struck to celebrate Theodosius II's ninth quinquennalia, this elegantly designed coin shows the same scene on both sides: on the reverse we have the emperor, nimbate, wearing consular robes, and holding a mappa and a cruciform sceptre; and on the obverse we a close-up view of the emperor's full bust. The disappointing thing about Theodosius II is that while he was certainly not a bad person, the real rulers of the state were his sister Pulcheria and his wife Eudocia (formerly the pagan Athenais).
