Theodore Comnenus-Ducas, as emperor of Thessalonica, 1225/7-1230. Aspron Trachy (Silver, 33 mm, 3.89 g, 6 h), Thessalonica. IC - XC / IC - AK Christ, nimbate with three pellets in each arm of nimbus, wearing tunic and kolobion, seated facing on throne without back, raising right hand in benediction and holding Gospels in left. Rev. ΘΕOΔωΡΟC ΔVΚΑ Ο ΑΓΗΟC ΔΗΜΤΡΟ (sic) Theodore, on left, wearing stemma, divitision, and jeweled loros, and Saint Demetrius, on right, nimbate, wearing military tunic, breastplate, and sagion, holding sword over shoulder in left hand, both standing facing, together holding a long staff surmounted with a cross in circle above a triangular decoration on the shaft. DOC 1a. SB 2158. A beautiful, well-struck, attractively toned and perfectly centered example of an extremely rare type. Extremely fine.
The misspelling on the reverse, ΔΗΜΤΡΟ for the expected ΔΙΜΙΤΡΙΟC, is quite curious!
