Seal or Bulla (Lead, 27 mm, 22.21 g, 12 h), seal of the future emperor Nikephoros Botaneiates. OA/Δ/H/M/H -T/P/I/O/C St. Demetrios standing facing, nimbate and wearing military dress, holding spear with his right hand and resting his left on a decorated shield by his side. Rev. -•-/ + KE BΘ, / ΝΙΚΗΦΟΡΟ / ΚΟΥΡΟΠΑΛA, / S ΔΟΥΞ ΤΩΝ Α/ΝΑΤ, ΛΙΚ, ΤΩ/ ΒΟΤΑΝΕΙ/ΑΤΗ "Lord help Nikephoros kouropalates and doux of the Anatolikoi, the Botaneiates" in eight lines, within round dotted border. DO Seals 3, 86.18 (same bouloterion). Zacos 2690 bis a (same bouloterion). A wonderful seal with a fine patina, superior to the DO and Zacos examples. Old scrape on obverse, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
