SICILY. Messana. Circa 412-408 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27 mm, 17.25 g, 9 h). The Nymph Messana, wearing long chiton and holding goad in her right hand and the reins in both, driving big of mules walking to left; in the exergue, two opposed dolphins; border of dots. Rev. ΜΕΣΣΑΝΙΩΝ Hare springing to left above an ear of grain; above, dove flying upwards to left. Buceti 92 (but bird on the reverse identified as an eagle). Caltabiano 621 (D 220 / 247). SNG ANS 378 (same dies). SNG Lloyd 1105 (same dies). A very nicely centered example, struck on a broad flan. Lightly toned. Metal fault on the reverse, otherwise, about extremely fine.
