Jacques Pantaléon was appointed Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, in 1255 by Pope Alexander IV. In 1261, the year that he was elected Pope as Urban IV, the Byzantines recaptured Constantinople, which had been conquered during the disgraceful Fourth Crusade. Urban never accepted the dissolution of the Latin Empire of Constantinople and unsuccessfully tried to organise its recapture from the Byzantines.
