CIMMERIAN BOSPOROS. Nymphaion. Circa 400 BC. Diobol (Silver, 11 mm, 1.65 g, 9 h). Head of a nymph to left, her hair bound in sakkos. Rev. NYN Grape bunch on vine; all within incuse square. Anokhin 949. Frolova Type I, 2-5. HGC 7, 13. MacDonald 86. SNG Stancomb 508. Well centered and toned. Very rare. Good very fine.
From a German collection.

The way the grape vine is shown on this coin - coming out from a trunk somewhere off to the right, beyond the field of the coin - is very painterly. It is as if you were looking through a window, which is a technique that is rarely seen on coins. An interesting parallel is G. Hamerani's A VIII/1699 piastra reverse showing the harbour at Anzio, seen through tree branches on the heights above the sea.
