MACEDON. Mende. Circa 460-423 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 17.19 g, 10 h), circa 425. Dionysos, his bearded facing head turned slightly to the left, wearing an ivy wreath and a chiton, holding a kantharos in his right hand and a thyrsos in his left, reclining to right on the back of a donkey walking to right; below, ivy branch (apparently effaced from the die). Rev. ΜΕΝ-ΔΑ-ΙΟ-Ν Raised square bearing a vine with four bunches of grapes; all within shallow incuse square. Dewing 1047 (same dies). Gulbenkian 410 (same dies). Jameson 1960 (same dies). Noe, Mende 64. A lovely, sharp and attractively toned piece. Some uncleaned deposits and roughness, otherwise, about extremely fine.
From a European collection and that of a Nobleman who died in 1940, and from the Kaliandra Hoard of 1913 (IGCH 358).
