KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander I, 498-454 BC. Octodrachm (Silver, 32 mm, 27.79 g, 7 h), plated with a thick coating of silver, Aigai (?), 476/5-c. 460 (? or slightly later). Horseman, wearing petasos and chlamys, standing right, holding two spears, behind bridled horse standing right. Rev. ΑΛΕ-ΞΑ-ΝΔ-ΡΟ in shallow incuse square around quadripartite square in relief. Cf. Raymond Group II 46 (similarly crude lettering). SNG ANS 22. An impressive coin of fine late Archaic style, and quite rare. Test cuts, revealing very thick plating over a base metal core, and with a graffito on the obverse, otherwise, about extremely fine.
From the collection of the late Y. Kalofagas, acquired prior to 2000.

The very thick plating, and the virtually normal weight of this coin makes one wonder whether this was actually officially issued in the same way as the debased fractions were. Had it been produced by ordinary forgers you would expect that they would have used less silver.
