GREAT BRITAIN: AE medal (16.47g), ND, Adams & Chao-PBv 27-W, 37mm bronze medal of Admiral Vernon and the taking of Porto Bello, figure of Admiral Vernon three-quarter left with baton in left hand with THE BRITISH GLORY REVIV D BY ADMIRAL VERNON around // ships in busy harbor scene with HE TOOK PORTO BELLO WITH SIX SHIPS ONLY around and BY COURAGE AND CONDUCT in exergue, light oxidation, somewhat crude, plain edge, VF-EF, R6 (Adams & Chao). Admiral Edward Vernan was a British naval commander during the War of Jenkins' Ear in 1739. He squared off with Admiral Blas of the Spanish Navy and took the port of Porto Bello, now in Panama, with only six ships. Consequently, he became very popular in England and the American colonies, and was commemorated on many medals.
